Weekend Art
Last weekend Jason and I headed out to District La Brea to view the new Shepard Fairey mural and art gallery showing. I am such a huge admirer of Shepard Fairey’s work so it was a very cool experience to meet him in person, (spray painted hands and all) as he took a break from mural painting to mingle in the gallery. In typical Shepard Fairey style, his outdoor mural includes large blocks of stenciled patterns, which now ornately decorate what used to be a generic building on La Brea. Although Shepard was the artist I most looked forward to seeing, I also discovered the work of Mercedes Helnwein whose oil pastel and graphite illustrations were stunning. Below I’m photographed next to one of Mercedes’ oil pastels titled Erika, which turned out to be one of my favorites pieces of the night. So…have you seen the La Brea mural? What did you think?
