The Hawaiian Sunset cocktail brings all of the tropical flavors of a classic tiki drink without the rum.
Hawaiian Sunset Cocktail
Made popular in the now closed Aku Aku Polynesian Restaurant at the Stardust Hotel in Las Vegas, this tiki cocktail is something of a rarity as it calls for Vodka instead of rum. From Painkillers to the Jungle Bird and the classic Mai Tai, I love a Tiki drink and the Hawaiian Sunset is one of my favorites.
While these cocktails are delicious on a warm summer's day, the pretty pink color makes them a pretty drink to serve for Valentine's Day!
Ingredients in a Hawaiian Sunset
- Vodka - vodka makes the cocktail lighter in flavor than the usually sweet rum tiki cocktail.
- Orgeat - this almond syrup is absolutely delicious and found in lots of tiki drinks.
- Lime Juice - fresh squeezed lime juice.
- Lemon Juice - fresh squeezed lemon juice.
- Grenadine - adds a sweet, tart flavor and creates the beautiful pink color.
How to Make a Hawaiian Sunset
- In a cocktail shaker filled with ice, combine all of the ingredients.
- Shake until well chilled and icy.
- Strain into a chilled cocktail coup.
- Garnish with a thin slice of lime and or heart gummy if you are celebrating Valentine's Day with these drinks!
If you enjoy the flavors of a Mai Tai, you need to try a Hawaiian Sunset. With lime and orgeat it has a very similar sweet and tart quality to the Mai Tai.
This drink is beautiful served in chilled cocktail coups. Keep glass coups in the freezer until just before serving. This not only looks beautiful and frosty but it will keep the cocktail chilled for longer as this drink is not served over ice.
Valentine's Day Cocktail
Whether you're celebrating Valentine's Day, a girls night in, a birthday or throwing a luau or tropical tiki themed party; you are going to fall in love with the Hawaiian Sunset.

Leah Bergman says
Hi Maureen! I used Brach's brand heart gummies. They are usually available this time of year in the Valentine's Day candy section.

What kind of orgeat do you like?
Leah Bergman says
The brand I use is called Liquid Alchemist and it's available in my local grocery store in the alcohol section with the mixers, bitters, etc. Enjoy!
