If there’s one treat that magically disappears the moment it hits the holiday snack table, it’s Christmas Puppy Chow also known as Reindeer Munch! It’s crunchy, chocolatey, with salty pretzels and peppermint pieces. This combination is absolutely impossible to resist!
Christmas Puppy Chow
Every December, I find myself making batch after batch of Christmas Puppy Chow. Some to gift to friends, some to bring to parties, and plenty for the kids and I to snack on.
This version is extra festive with star-shaped pretzels, mini Christmas M&M’s, crushed candy canes, and a generous dusting of powdered-sugar. It’s the kind of recipe that makes the whole kitchen smell like peanut butter and chocolate and invites family into the kitchen to sneak bites.
Like all the best holiday recipes, this one is easy, no-bake, and perfect for making with kids. Melt, mix, shake, and sprinkle! And it always turns out delicious, even if you measure with your heart or substitute ingredients.

- 4 cups star-shaped pretzels

Possible Substitutions
The best thing about Puppy Chow—Reindeer Munch, Muddy Buddies, whatever you call it—is how endlessly customizable it is. Swap in your favorite mix-ins and make it your own!
Prefer white chocolate? Go for it. Love extra candy cane? Add more—or skip it entirely. I used Chocolate Chex, but any flavor works beautifully, from peanut butter to traditional to even cinnamon.
Want a peppermint twist? Add a splash of peppermint extract. Not a peanut butter fan? Leave it out. This is one of those foolproof recipes you truly can’t mess up, so have fun experimenting and tailor each batch to your taste.
How to Make Christmas Puppy Chow
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the Chex cereal, pretzels, Christmas M&M’s, and crushed candy canes.
- In a saucepan, melt the butter, chocolate chips, peanut butter, and vanilla over low heat, stirring constantly until smooth and glossy.
3. Pour the warm chocolate-peanut butter mixture over the cereal mixture. Stir gently until everything is evenly coated and deliciously chocolatey.
4. Transfer half of the coated mixture into a large (2-gallon) resealable plastic bag.
5. Add the powdered sugar, seal the bag, and shake until the cereal is fully coated in sugar “snow.”
6. Spread the mixture onto a cookie sheet and toss it together with the remaining chocolate-coated Chex mixture.
7. Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator until ready to devour or gift.
Why You’ll Love Christmas Puppy Chow
- It makes a giant batch—enough for gifting and snacking.
- No baking required!

Tips for the Best Puppy Chow
- Use a gentle hand when stirring: Chex cereal breaks easily, so fold rather than stir aggressively.
- Want extra peppermint? Stir in more crushed candy canes after the mixture cools.
- Gift-worthy: Package in cellophane bags tied with red ribbon or fill festive tins for neighbors.
- Make ahead: Puppy chow stays fresh in the fridge for up to a week.
