I'm turning the classic firecracker "bomb pop" into a healthier version with real fruit, yogurt, and absolutely no food coloring. Perfect for celebrating the 4th of July and enjoying all summer long.
Healthier Firecracker Ice Pops
With the Fourth of July approaching I thought it would be fun to re-create a healthier version of the classic “Firecracker Pop” with layers of red, white and blue. This recipe is perfect for serving kids a cold treat all summer long.
Ingredients in Homemade Firecracker Popsicles
No artificial flavors or dyes here, just sweet fruit, yogurt, and of course a bit of sugar. I mean, can it really be considered dessert without a little of the sweet stuff? If you plan to make these for kiddos or just want to cut back on your sugar intake, feel free to sub agave nectar or even honey!
- Strawberries - fresh in season strawberries.
- Blueberries - fresh blueberries when they are in season have much more flavor than frozen so that's what I use.
- Lime Juice - to bring out the flavor of the fruit!
- Sugar - I use a little in each layer but you can substitute for honey or agave if you like.
- Milk - you can use any milk you like from whole milk to almond, and coconut.
- Greek Yogurt - I like to use vanilla but you can use plain if you like a tarter popsicle.
How to Make Firecracker Pops:
- Make the Red Layer: In a blender, combine the strawberries, sugar and lime juice. Puree until fruit is completely liquified. Pour into the ice-pop molds ⅓ of the way. Freeze until firm, about 30 minutes.
- Make the White Layer: Whisk the milk together with yogurt, and sugar. Pour into the ice-pop molds ⅓ of the way. Freeze until semi-firm, about 20 minutes. Remove from freezer and insert popsicle sticks through the white layer. Freeze for an additional 10-20 minutes or until firm.
-
Make the Blue Layer: Puree the blueberries, sugar and lime juice. Puree until fruit is completely liquified. Pour into the ice-pop molds being careful to pour around sticks. Freeze until solid, 3 hours or overnight. Just before serving, briefly run molds under hot water to release the pops.
Ice Pop Molds for Firecracker Pops
I have this popsicle mold but these star molds are also a fun shape and more traditional to the classic firecracker popsicle shape. No popsicle molds? You can always use small paper cups and peel away the paper after freezing.

It was so fun watching you make these, Leah. Setting a timer for your layers, or for when you put in the Popsicle sticks, is a great idea. Especially when you have children (or your mom) around to distract you.

Yes, exactly! Mothers can be very distracting. 😉
