Pumpkin Whiskey Sour Cocktail for Halloween
This Halloween, elevate your celebration with a delightful twist on a classic cocktail: the Pumpkin Whiskey Sour. Perfectly spiced and just the right amount of sweet, this drink captures all the flavors of the season while bringing a festive flair to your gatherings.
Pumpkin Whiskey Sour Ingredients
To conjure up this bewitching brew, gather the following ingredients:
- 2 oz whiskey
- ¾ oz fresh lemon juice
- ¾ oz simple syrup- adjust to taste.
- ½ Tablespoon pumpkin pie puree - you can also use plain pumpkin puree however pie puree has a bit more flavor.
- ½ oz egg white - optional but adds a delicious creamy texture and foam.
- Pinch of pumpkin pie spice
- Ice
- garnish: maraschino cherry
How to Make a Pumpkin Whiskey Sour
- Dry Shake: In a cocktail shaker, combine the whiskey, fresh lemon juice, pumpkin puree, simple syrup, egg white and a dash of pumpkin pie spice. Shake for 30 seconds to foam the egg.
- Second Shake: Add ice to the shaker and shake vigorously for another 15 seconds. This will chill your mixture and blend all the flavors.
- Strain and Serve: Strain the mixture into a chilled coupe glass.
- Dry Ice: for an extra spooky touch, add a small cube of dry ice just before serving!
- Garnish: Garnish with a cocktail pick and maraschino cherry.
Tips for the Perfect Pumpkin Whiskey Sour
- Make It Ahead: If you’re hosting a party, consider batching this cocktail. Mix the whiskey, lemon juice, pumpkin puree, simple syrup, and spices in advance, and shake with ice just before serving. I would recommend leaving out the egg white if batching this cocktail.
- Experiment with Flavors: Play around with the spices! A little nutmeg or allspice can add an extra depth of flavor. Or use a pumpkin syrup instead of simple syrup for even more flavor.
- Non-Alcoholic Version: For a family-friendly option, swap the whiskey for a spiced apple cider. Just mix it with the other ingredients, and you’re good to go!
How to Use Dry Ice in Cocktails
To create the etherial look of this cocktail, you only need a small piece of dry ice. Here's how to use dry ice into your Halloween cocktails...
- Use Tongs. Never touch dry ice with your bare hands. Use tongs to transfer small pieces to cocktail glass.
- Prepare your cocktail. Mix your drink as you normally would.
- Break the dry ice into small pieces. Using a hammer or mallet, carefully break the dry ice into small chunks about the size of a sugar cube.
4. Add the dry ice to the cocktail. Drop a small piece of dry ice into each glass just before serving. The dry ice will immediately start to bubble and create a misty fog.
5. Wait to evaporate before drinking. Allow the dry ice to fully dissolve before drinking to avoid any risk of consuming the dry ice. This usually takes a few minutes but will leave your drink icy cold!
6. Not for children. Never serve drinks with dry ice to children. If you are serving in a punch bowl, do not spoon out dry ice but rather just the drink itself.
With or without dry ice, this cocktail is lovely! The egg white naturally separates to make a beautiful foam atop the sour.
The Perfect Pairing
Pair your Pumpkin Whiskey Sour with some seasonal snacks! Think roasted pumpkin seeds, or a Halloween Charcuterie Board to snack on while you sip.
