Creamy Coconut Margaritas are one of my favorite easy cocktails to make at home. I almost always have a can of coconut cream in my pantry and after you taste this drink, I'm sure you'll keep the ingredients stocked as well!
Creamy Coconut Margarita Recipe
One of the most popular recipes here on Freutcake is my Coconut Blood Orange Margarita. It's pretty and pink and packed with coconut flavor. But if you don't happen to have blood oranges or you just love the effortless simplicity of a pure coconut margarita, this recipe is for you. It's incredibly creamy and luscious with just enough tangy lime flavor. It truly is my favorite!
Ingredients in a Coconut Margarita
- Tequila - in general I always use silver tequila for my margaritas because I prefer the flavor! In this margarita I think silver tequila pairs best with coconut.
- Cointreau- it wouldn't be a proper margarita without a little bit of Cointreau! This adds another level of citrus flavor to margaritas.
- Coconut Cream - canned full fat coconut cream is an unsweetened coconut cream usually used for cooking. In most grocery stores you can find it with other canned goods or in the Asian section of the supermarket. Thai Kitchen makes a great Coconut Cream but I also buy it at Sprouts and even Trader Joes.
- Cream of Coconut - I like Coco Real brand because it comes in a convenient squeeze bottle! This product is a sweet coconut cream that's made specifically for cocktails. Think Pina Colada!
- Lime Juice - fresh squeezed lime juice is the only way to go.
- Ice - you will need lots of ice to shake these drinks up and also for your glass.
How to Make a Coconut Margarita
- Ice - fill a cocktail shaker with ice and fill a margarita glass with ice.
- Measure - measure out all of the ingredients into your ice filled cocktail shaker.
- Shake - shake hard for 30 seconds to really combine the ingredients and chill the cocktail. This is especially important to achieve the creamy consistency of this margarita. If you don't have a cocktail shaker, here's a great one!
- Strain - Strain coconut margarita into your ice filled glass. Sip and enjoy!
Tips for Making the Perfect Coconut Margarita
- Use silver tequila - it's so much more mild in flavor and won't overwhelm the coconut.
- Use two kinds of coconut - the combination of unsweetened coconut cream and sweetened cream of coconut makes the perfect combo! I've tried this with just coconut cream from a can and the drink is not the same.
- Use fresh lime - no lime shaped squeeze bottles allowed! This is one ingredient that you NEED to be fresh for cocktails like a margarita that only calls for a few simple ingredients.
- Orange liqueur- I stand by by believe that a splash of orange liqueur makes all margaritas better! This is how you get that deep citrus flavor from restaurant style margaritas. If you can't find Cointreau (which is my favorite) you can substitute Grand Marnier however it will have a stronger flavor.
- Don't skip the shaker! Shaking a margarita is essential to mix the coconut cream well, chill the alcohol and slightly dilute it.
What to Serve with Coconut Margaritas
While this might LOOK like the perfect summer drink, I enjoy these margs at home all year long! The flavors are very tropical but they can turn a cold and cloudy winter or early spring day into a vacation at home. Taco Tuesday anyone? Here's a few recipes to make with your margaritas:
- Grilled Mexican Corn Salad
- Perfect Guacamole
- Mahi Fish Tacos with Mango Relish
- Crockpot Shredded Beef Tacos
- Easy Mexican Stuffed Peppers
- The ULTIMATE Guacamole

Coconut Margarita
The ultimate creamy coconut and lime margarita made with two kinds of coconut for extra flavor and creamy texture.
Ingredients
- 1 ½ oz silver tequila
- 1 ½ oz unsweetened coconut cream (from a can)
- ¾ oz Cointreau
- ½ oz cream of coconut, I use Coco Real
- juice from ½ of a lime, or more to taste
- lime wedges for garnish
- ice
Instructions
- Fill a cocktail shaker and margarita glass both with ice.
- Open can of coconut cream and mix it well with a fork. Coconut cream tends to separate in the can. TIP: I usually empty mine into a large glass measuring cup and whisk it up with a fork. It's won't be completely smooth but it will be easier to pour into your jigger this way.
- Measure and add tequila, coconut cream, cream of coconut, lime, and Cointreau to ice filled shaker.
- Firmly replace the shaker lid and shake for 30 seconds or until the margarita is fully combined and chilled. This creates the perfect creamy cocktail!
- Strain into ice filled margarita glass and garnish with lime. Enjoy right away!
