These Halloween Muddy Buddies are the ultimate sweet and salty Halloween dessert mix! Crunchy Chex cereal coated in chocolate, peanut butter, and cocoa powder, then tossed with Mini Oreos, pretzels, and colorful Halloween M&M's. This easy, no-bake Halloween Chex Mix is perfect for parties, movie nights, and all October long.
Halloween Muddy Buddies
If there's one thing my family can't resist, it's a big bowl of homemade Muddy Buddies (also known as Puppy Chow!) Chocolate, peanut butter, crunchy cereal, and powdered sugar. In fact I make a Christmas version we call Reindeer Munch and it's my son's favorite!
For Halloween, I wanted to make a version that was extra chocolatey and loaded with all the fun Halloween treats.
Instead of the classic white powdered sugar coating, I added cocoa powder to give these Muddy Buddies a darker chocolate color. Then I mixed in Mini Oreos, salty Halloween-shaped pretzels, and orange and black M&M's for a little crunch and color.
The result is a ridiculously delicious Halloween sweet snack mix that's perfect for setting out at a party or enjoying during a Halloween movie marathon. And the best part? No baking required!
What Are Muddy Buddies?
Muddy Buddies, also known as Puppy Chow, are a classic no-bake snack made with Chex cereal coated in melted chocolate and peanut butter, then tossed in powdered sugar. Despite the name Puppy Chow, this is definitely a treat for people!
For my Halloween version, I use Rice Chex cereal and add cocoa powder to the powdered sugar coating. It gives the cereal a darker chocolatey finish that's perfect for Halloween.
A handful of Mini Oreos, pretzels, and Halloween candy turns this classic snack into the ultimate Halloween party mix.
Halloween Muddy Buddies Ingredients
This recipe is incredibly easy to make with just a handful of ingredients. Here's what you'll need:
- Rice Chex Cereal: The classic base for homemade Muddy Buddies! Rice Chex has a light, crispy texture that holds onto the chocolate peanut butter coating.
- Semisweet Chocolate Chips: Melted chocolate coats the cereal and helps the cocoa sugar mixture stick.
- Creamy Peanut Butter: Gives the chocolate coating its rich peanut butter flavor. I recommend using a regular creamy peanut butter rather than a natural, oily variety.
- Salted Butter: Helps create a smooth chocolate coating and flavor.
- Vanilla Extract: A little vanilla brings out the chocolate flavor.
- Powdered Sugar: The classic coating that gives Muddy Buddies their signature sweet finish.
- Cocoa Powder: Mixed with powdered sugar to give these Muddy Buddies a darker chocolate color. Black cocoa powder will give you the darkest finish.
- Halloween Pretzels: I found the cutest Halloween-shaped pretzels, and they're perfect for this mix! Regular mini pretzels work just as well.
- Mini Oreos: Because you can never have too much chocolate!
- Halloween M&M's: Orange and black M&M's add the perfect pop of Halloween color.
How to Make Halloween Muddy Buddies
This easy Halloween Chex Mix comes together in just a few steps, and there's no oven required!
1. Start with Rice Chex. Pour the Rice Chex cereal into a very large mixing bowl. You'll want plenty of room to stir without crushing the cereal.
2. Melt the chocolate mixture. In a microwave-safe bowl, combine chocolate chips, creamy peanut butter, and butter. Microwave in 30-second intervals, stirring between each, until smooth. Stir in vanilla extract.
3. Coat the cereal. Pour the melted chocolate mixture over the Rice Chex and gently fold until every piece is coated.
4. Add the cocoa sugar coating. In a separate bowl, whisk together powdered sugar and cocoa powder. Working in batches, transfer the chocolate-coated cereal to a large resealable bag or lidded container. Add the cocoa sugar mixture and gently shake until coated. Alternately you can toss it all together in a bowl.
5. Let the cereal set. Spread the coated cereal onto a parchment-lined baking sheet and let it sit for about 20 minutes, or until the chocolate has set.
6. Add the Halloween mix-ins. Gently toss the coated cereal with Mini Oreos, Halloween pretzels, and M&M's.
That's it! The easiest Halloween party snack.
Tips for the Best Halloween Puppy Chow
Muddy Buddies are pretty hard to mess up, but here are a few tips for making the best batch.
- Use a BIG mixing bowl. You'll need plenty of room to toss the cereal without crushing it.
- Melt the chocolate slowly. Short microwave intervals help keep the chocolate from overheating.
- Coat the cereal while the chocolate is warm. This helps the powdered sugar and cocoa mixture stick evenly.
- Work in batches. It's much easier to coat the cereal evenly when you shake smaller amounts at a time.
- Add the candy last. I like to wait until the chocolate coating has set before mixing in the Oreos, pretzels, and M&M's. This keeps everything looking pretty and prevents the candy from getting covered in cocoa powder.
Easy Halloween Party Snack Mix
If you're hosting a Halloween party, this is one of those recipes I love because you can make it ahead of time and set it out for everyone to snack on.
I especially love serving these Halloween Muddy Buddies in a glass pumpkin jar! It's such a simple way to make a homemade snack mix feel festive, and it looks adorable on a Halloween dessert table.
You can also package individual portions in clear treat bags tied with black or orange ribbon for a cute Halloween party favor.
It's the perfect snack for a Halloween movie night, a Halloween dessert table, or a party where everyone can grab a handful.
